Deputy Gallagher – Garda management believe Donegal Town would be better served by more patrols

A Donegal TD says An Garda Siochana believes the community of Donegal Town would be better served by having more patrols rather than keeping the station open during quiet times.

But Fianna Fail Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher says he has been told there are no plans to reduce the number of gardai in the town, the level of patrollling or the garda response.

Meanwhile, Deputy Gallagher says refurbishment of the Garda Station in Donegal Town is expected to start before the summer.

He was speaking following a statement yesterday from Sinn Fein Deputy Pearse Doherty, who said there are plans to reduce the hours the Donegal Town station will be open.

However, it’s undertood garda management believe it would be a better use of resources to have a garda out on patrol rather than keeping the station open during quiet, off-peak times.

But although Deputy Gallagher says he’s been told there are no plans to reduce the number of gardai in Donegal Town or to downgrade the service provided, he points out that overall numbers in the county have fallen:
