Sligo surfers among the medals at European championships



Sligo surfers lead Ireland to a third place finish overall at the European Championships at the weekend in Norway.

Ashleigh Smith and Shane Meehan both secured silver medals in the bodyboard competitons, while Andrew Kilfeather made the longboard final and finished fourth overall.

Gearoid McDaid enjoyed a similar result in the highly-competitive Men’s Open discipline.

Irish Surfing is celebrating following the Irish Surf Team’s historic best performance at the 2017 European Surfing Championships that took place in Stavanger, Norway last week. Ireland had four surfers compete on the podium and the team finished 3rd overall, behind Portugal in 1st and Italy in 2nd. Individual medals were awarded to Ashleigh Smith, Silver in Women’s Bodyboard, Shane Meehan, Silver in Men’s Bodyboard, Andrew Kilfeather, Copper in Longboard and putting in an incredible perfonace to make the Open Men’s final, Gearoid McDaid secured a Copper Medal for his 4th place finish.

The team was led to success by Manager Hugh O’Brien Moran and Coach, Owen Murphy. Irish Judge, Garbhan McCloskey recognised as one of Europe’s leading judges, was on the panel for the Grand Finals and judge both the Open Men’s and Women’s finals.
