Council supports call for automatic inquests into deaths of mothers giving birth



Sligo County Council has given its support to a Bill that would allow inquests automatically take place in cases where a mother dies while giving birth.

The measure is contained in the Coroner’s Bill which Independent Councillor Michael Clarke called on the council to support at its December meeting.

Cllr Clarke says Independent TD Claire Daly got the Bill through the Dail but he claimed it’s been stalled by the government since.

He says families who have lost mothers through matenal deaths have to fight four to five years to get clarity about the cause of death.
