Leitrim hammer Sligo in Connacht LGFA championship

Leitrim women’s gaelic footballers were emphatic 7-20 to 0-7 winners over Sligo in Sunday’s TG4 Connacht intermediate championship game in Drumshanbo.

The result was of little consequence with Leitrim already assured of a place in the Connacht IFC final against Roscommon on the 12th of May, but there were rampant here against a youthful and largely inexperienced Sligo side.

Leitrim led by 4-8 to 0-4 at half-time – and scored three further goals in the second half to win at a canter.

With little at stake in this fixture, the idea behind the game was to provide match-time for both counties.

However, it’s hard to see what benefit the game was to either side, given the one-sided nature of the contest.

Sligo, were were relegated to Division four of the Lidl national football league this season will be contesting the All-Ireland junior football championship this year.

On the evidence of Sunday’s encounter with Leitrim, they have a lot of work to do.
