Sligo senior footballers were denied a memorable Connacht championship victory over holders Galway on Saturday when a Rob Tierney goal deep in added time gave the Tribesmen a slightly fortunate 1-13 to 0-14 win in their semi-final at Markievicz Park.
Sligo had led this match from the start, establishing a 0-9 to 0-6 interval advantage, and they briefly led by four (0-11 to 0-7) early in the second-half.
But they were caught late on by Galway’s suckerpunch – the Tribesman had squandered three of four good goalscoring opportunites in the early minutes of this semi-final – but otherwise they were pushed to the pin of their collars by a well-organised Sligo team, who will look back on this game as a missed opportunity.
Despite the manner of the finish, Sligo manager Tony McEntee was full of praise for his players when he spoke to reporters after Saturday’s game.
