Hillwalker rescued in multi agency operation in Donegal

A hillwalker has been rescued after getting into difficulty on Lough Salt in Donegal.

The multi agency search and rescue was launched on Saturday afternoon.

The alarm was raised at around 1.20pm, with Donegal Mountain rescue tasked by Gardai to the walk who had sustained a lower leg injury on Lough Salt.

Some of the walking group were at the base of the mountain, awaiting the team’s arrival.

Once on the scene, the team stabilized the leg and sent the remainder of the walking group down the mountain as the weather deteriorated.

Heavy hail and inclement weather resulted in challenging conditions for the rescue operation.

The team were able to secure the casualty in the stretcher and proceed to descend the hill.

As the weather continued to worsen, the team were forced off the path as it was unsuitable for transporting the stretcher, and had to take several detours to safely transport the casualty down.

The casualty was successfully transported off the hill and taken to hospital via ambulance for further treatment.
