Derek Fox unseated at opening fence of Grand National

There was to be no back-to-back Grand National wins for Corach Rambler and Sligo jockey Derek Fox at Aintree on Saturday, as last year’s winner unseated his rider at the very first fence in the 2024 edition of the most famous steeplechase in the world.

Corach Rambler, the 2023 winner, went off as second favourite – but the horse clattered into the opening fence and unseated its rider.

It was a dangerous moment for Fox, who bumped heads with his horse before crashing to the floor.

Fortunately, both the rider and horse returned to the stable afterwards uninjured.

The race was eventually won by the pre-race favourite – the Willie Mullins trained I am Maximus.

The Gordon Elliott trained Delta Work was second with his stablemate Minella Indo in third.

This year’s field was shortened in a bid to avoid any fatalities and the Jockey Club say all horses returned home safely.
