Sligo-Leitrim lose Oscar Traynor semi-final

Sligo-Leitrim’s run in junior soccer’s premier national representative cup competition, the Oscar Traynor, came to an end on Sunday when they were beaten 2-1 by Mayo in an entertaining semi-final in Athlone.

Ryan McManus gave Sligo-Leitrim the lead on 15 minutes before Dylan McKee equalised for Mayo.

The goal, which proved to be Mayo’s matchwinner, was scored in the first minute of the second half, by Jack O’Connor.

Mayo also introduced former Sligo Rovers star (and Sligo native) Raff Cretaro, as a substitute in the closing moments of the game.

Sligo-Leitrim boss John Loftus spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Dónal Ryan after Sunday’s semi-final loss.

Mayo will now play Waterford in the Oscar Traynor Cup final, in what will be the western league’s first Oscar Traynor decider since 1981.

The Munster side beat the Donegal league 3-2 in last weekend’s first semi-final.
