Impressive Sligo topple league leaders in AIL

Sligo senior men’s rugby team produced one of their biggest wins of the season so far on Saturday with a 25-24 victory over Energia AIL Division 2B leaders Instonians at Hamilton Park in Strandhill.

The result ended a 14-game unbeaten run for the Belfast side in Division 2B (and a 32-match winning streak across all competitions) which had seen them win every one of their league games this season prior to Saturday’s visit to Strandhill.

Sligo trailed by a point at half-time (14-13) having scored a try from a rolling maul in the opening half.

Philip Carter added a second try for the home side in the second half, in a fine Sligo display – and the winning score came courtesy of a penalty try in the closing stages.

Sligo remain fourth in the Division 2B table on 50 points with Saturday’s win assuring them of a place in the end-of-season promotion play-offs.
