SUH among the 5 most overcrowded Hospitals in February

The INMO has confirmed that Sligo University Hospital is the 5th most overcrowded Hospital in the county during the month of February.

Latest figures issued by the organisation claim there were 10,991 patients on trolleys in Hospitals across the country during the month of February.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s Trolley Watch figures placed Sligo behind St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin and another Saolta Hospital Galway University which was ranked third.

University Hospital Limerick and Cork University were the most overcrowded hospitals.

The figures confirmed that 649 people spent time on trollies at SUH in February 2024.

That’s an increase of 121 on the February figure of 2023.

Meanwhile there 292 people on trollies at Letterkenny University this month.

The figure for the corresponding month last year was 392

INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha said:

“The levels of overcrowding this month have not diminished since the St. Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday. With two bank holidays happening in quick succession in March, the HSE must outline what steps they are taking in the run up to St. Patrick’s Day to ensure we don’t have a repeat of February overcrowding.

“Since the end of January, I have been in the majority of hospitals that the INMO counts trolleys in and have witnessed dangerous scenes in many hospitals with patients being treated in completely inappropriate spaces. It is clear that most hospitals are operating at over one hundred per cent occupancy meaning that patients are being cared for in all available spaces which is unsafe.

She went on to add that the morale of INMO members is on the floor and many feel a sense of helplessness when it comes to being able to carry out their roles to the high levels they have been trained to.
