No Olympic qualification for local surfers

There was no joy for Sligo surfers Gearóid McDaid and Tom Murphy in their bids to secure Olympic qualification via this week’s World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico.

Both surfers made their exits from their respective competitions on Tuesday.

McDaid, a silver medallist at last summer’s European Championships, performed well in his early heat – but was eliminated on Tuesday after Heat 14 of the main men’s competition.

Murphy, a leaving certificate student at Summerhill College, gained valuable experience in his event.

The duo are part of a six-strong Ireland team competing at the World Surfing Games.

The team also includes Ayesha Garvey from Rossnowlagh Surf Club.

The World Surfing Games have already see some big international names miss out on Olympic qualification with world no 2 Caity Simmers and WSL Championship Tour surfer Matthew McGillivray among those to be eliminated in the early rounds.
