Local surfers bid for Olympic qualification in Puerto Rico



Sligo pro surfer Gearóid McDaid leads a team of six Irish surfers who’ll be competing at the World Surfing Games over the next 10 days in Puerto Rico.

Competition begins on Friday, February 23rd, and will until Sunday week, March 3rd.

The event is the final qualifier for the Paris Olympics.

McDaid and fellow Sligo man (and Summerhill College leaving cert student) Tom Murphy are part of the six-strong Ireland team, which also includes Ayesha Garvey from Rossnowlagh Surf Club, Robin Keating (Mayo), Grace Doyle (Tramore) and Ruby Knox (Kerry).

The team have been in Puerto Rico this week, acclimatising and practising ahead of the start of the competition.

The qualfiiers from the World Surfing Games over the next two weeks will compete in the Olympic surfing competition this summer, which will be held in Teahupoo, Tahiti (July 27th-Aug 5th).
