Sligo’s Lauren Cadden on Ireland World Indoors team

Sligo Athletic Club sprinter Lauren Cadden is one of nine athletes named on the Ireland team for next month’s World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow.

Cadden will part of the women’s 4 x 400 metres relay squad for the three-day event, which takes place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow from Friday, March 1st to Sunday, March 3rd.

There are six athletes named for the relay squad.

The others are: Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC), Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC), Phil Healy (Bandon AC), Roisin Harrison (Emerald AC) and Rachel McCann (North Down AC).

The Ireland team is spearheaded by 60m hurdler Sarah Lavin, who recently equalled her personal best of 7.91 on her way to claiming her sixth national indoor 60m hurdles title at last weekend’s 123.ie National Indoor Championships.

Another athlete heading to Glasgow full of confidence is Sarah Healy (UCD AC), who will focus on the 1500m at these championships having broken the Irish senior indoor 1500m record with a stunning 4.03.83 earlier this month.

The time took over two seconds off the previous record held by Ciara Mageean and came just one week after Healy broke Mary Cullen’s national senior indoor record over 3000m with 8.36.06.

Several prominent Irish athletes, including Donegal’s Mark English and North Sligo’s Chris O’Donnell, have opted to skip the World Indoors as they concentrate instead on achieving the qualifying times for this summer’s Paris Olympics.
