Mona McSharry eighth in 50m final

Sligo swimmer Mona McSharry finished eighth in the final of the women’s 50 metres breaststroke on final Sunday of the World Aquatics Championships in Doha.

Starting from lane 1 in the ‘Splash and Dash’ as it’s known, McSharry clocked a time of 30:96 seconds behind the winner, Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte, who won third consecutive world gold in this event.

Despite not being amongst the medals, it was still an impressive week for the Tennessee based McSharry who reached three different World finals in recent days – in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events – having finished fifth in both the 100m and 200m finals.

Meanwhile, McSharry’s Daniel Wiffen is now a double world champion.

He added a gold medal in the 1500m Freestyle to the 800m Freestyle medal he won during a magic week in Qatar.
