Max Mata returns to Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers leading goalscorer last season, Max Mata, has returned to the Showgrounds on loan from Shrewsbury Town.

Mata left mid-season to join the English League 1 club – but got limited first team opportunities and scored just one goal.

Even though he spent just half of last season at the Showgrounds, he was still the club’s top scorer with 11 goals.

His return, albeit on a short-term loan, will be seen as a major attacking boost to Rovers.

The exact length of Mata’s loan period hasn’t been confirmed.

The New Zealand international spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Dónal Ryan on Thursday:

Mata will not be in the squad for Friday night’s trip to Dalymount Park to play Bohemians – as his international clearance still has to come through.

However, it’s hoped he will cleared to play in Rovers first home game, on Saturday week (Feb 24th), against Derry City.
