All-Stars topple Tralee after overtime

EJ Sligo All-Stars took a big step towards the end-of-season play-offs in the insuremyvan.ie men’s Superleague on Saturday night with a dramatic 102-101 win over Garvey’s Tralee Warriors in front of a raucous home support.

The sides were level at 20 points each at the end of the first quarter – but that gave no indication of the drama which was to come, as the All-Stars fell eight points behind by half-time – only to turn things around completely in the third quarter and lead by 12 points at one stage.

However, Tralee, with the mercurial Kieran Donaghy and 7ft 2inches Kerry teenager Cian O’Sullivan on court, closed that deficit down as the lead change hands on several occasions in the final quarter.

The sides finished level at 90-90 at the end of normal time.

In overtime, the All-Stars led 100 to 97 with just three seconds left on the clock – but resilient Tralee rallied again and led by one point with just 1.7 seconds remaining.

But somehow, in the last play of the match, All-Stars American Christian Williams drew a Tralee foul – and from the free-throw line, he sank both baskets to give the home side a dramatic victory.
