Big increase in burglaries across Sligo/Leitrim Garda division

There’s been a 17% increase in burglaries across the Sligo Leitrim Garda division over the last year.

That’s according to Phonewatch, who say that recent CSO recorded crime statistics show that the Sligo/Leitrim area recorded one of the highest increases in burglaries in the country.

There were a total of 151 recorded burglaries across Sligo and Leitrim over the last 12 months.

Donegal meanwhile saw a 10% decrease but there were still 140 recorded burglaries over the past year.

Mayo also saw a big spike in such crime too, with a 22% rise in burglaries over the same period.

Many counties experienced a fall with an 8% decrease nationally.

According to An Garda Síochána reports for national incidents, 26% of burglars enter homes through the back door, 24% via back windows and 8% through front windows, with 1 in 5 cases involving a burglar gaining access through an unsecure door or window. PhoneWatch urges homeowners to always be alert and protect their homes in all ways possible.
