Lack of infrastructure for the North West criticised in Oireachtas Committee meeting

A petition, which has garnered over 26,000 signatures calling for a greenway on the closed railway between Sligo and Galway, has been discussed at an Oireachtas Committee this afternoon.

However it’s claimed that Mayo County Council is hampering progress on the project.

In a statement, The Western Rail Trail campaign say that Sligo County Council share in their vision of a greenway from Collooney in Sligo to Athenry until such time as a railway is possible.

Mayo County Council on the other hand they say have refused to listen to the people of East Mayo.

Speaking in Leinster House this afternoon, Sligo Independent Councillor, Marie Casserly, confirmed that the project has the support of Sligo County Council, and urged Mayo County Council to reconsider.

Councillor Casserly also stressed the importance of the project to the region, saying that the lack of infrastructure thus far was embarrassing.
