ATU Sligo lose Sigerson Cup opener

ATU Sligo suffered an agonising 0-9 to 0-8 loss in Thursday night’s Sigerson Cup first round match against St Mary’s University College at the Dub Playing Fields in Belfast.

ATU were five points down at half-time (0-7 to 0-2) despite having a couple of good goal chances in that opening half, which they were unable to convert.

However, they showed commendable metal to close the gap in the second half – and the sides were actually level at 0-8 each as the match ticked towards added time.

Despite this defeat, all is not lost for Con O’Meara’s side – as they now get to play NUI Galway in round 2B next week.

Sligo will have home advantage for that game.

There was also disappointment for ATU Sligo Freshers – as they also suffered a one-point lose in their round 1 game – against ATU Galway in Ballinode (0-11 to 0-10).
