St Attracta’s lose junior ‘A’ final, Summerhill advance in senior championship

There were mixed fortunes for the Sligo schools in Wednesday’s Connacht Colleges GAA and LGFA championship matches.

Holders St Attracta’s Community School, Tubbercurry, were beaten by Sacred Heart Westport in the Connacht Colleges LGFA junior ‘A’ football final at the Air Dome in Bekan.

The final was moved from its original venue of Swinford on Wednesday morning because of a frozen pitch.

Outdoors in Bekan, Summerhill College’s senior boys footballers booked their place in the knockout stages of the provincial A championship with a 1-16 to 0-6 win over Ballinrobe Community School in the concluding group game.

Summerhill, last year’s Connacht Champions and All-Ireland Hogan Cup finalists, led by 0-9 to 0-5 at half-time – but pulled clear in the second half, restricting their opponents to a solitary point.

The two other teams in this group, Rice College Westport and St Jarlath’s of Tuam, are due to meet on Thursday – but with two wins from their three group games, Summerhill are assured of a Connacht semi-final place.

In schools rugby, both Sligo Grammar and Summerhill enjoyed pool victories in the opening matches of the Junior ‘A’ Schools Cup.

The Grammar, last year’s winners, Coláiste Iognaid (The Jes) 34-0 in Galway in their opening Pool B match.

In Pool A, Summerhill College were too good for Garbally on the Monsignor Michael Devine 4G pitch, winning 29-10.
