Donegal make McKenna Cup semi-finals despite points deduction

Donegal will contest this weekend’s Dr McKenna Cup semi-finals despite having two points docked for fielding an ineligible player (Finbarr Roarty) against Armagh last week.

The Orchard County beat Tyrone on Wednesday night in the concluding Section A game by 1-14 to 2-10.

Derry, as winners of Section B were already through to the semis.

Monaghan booked their place from Section C after a three-point win agianst Fermanagh at Brewster Park.

The BBC also reported on Wednesday night that Donegal manager Jim McGuinness is challenging the eight-week sideline suspension he was given for fielding Finbarr Roarty in last week’s game.

Roarty, then 17, featured in Donegal’s opening win in the competition over Armagh last Wednesday.

His inclusion appeared to break the rule which says senior inter-county players have to be aged 18 by the start of the calendar year.

McGuinness has requested a hearing with the Ulster GAA hearings committee.

That is likely to take place on Thursday evening.

It’s not clear on what grounds the Donegal bainisteoir is challenging the original Ulster Council suspension.
