Covid hits hard in Sligo, Leitrim & Donegal over Christmas

Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal were among the counties which saw the highest rates of Covid over Christmas.

Data seen by the Irish Independent shows that the three North West counties also saw some of the highest flu and RSV rates over the festive period.

Meanwhile, major efforts are continuing to keep overcrowding in Sligo and Letterkenny University hospitals under control.

The rising rates of flu and COVID-19 in the community are putting significant pressure on the hospitals.

Both Sligo and Letterkenny are currently managing multiple outbreaks of flu, COVID-19 and RSV.

Letterkenny is managing nine outbreaks of respiratory viruses currently and Sligo is currently dealing with four outbreaks.

In addition to these pressures, Saolta says there are very high attendances in the Emergency Department.

People are being asked not to visit patients if they are feeling unwell or have symptoms.
