Local Councillor is fearful over the pressure alcohol is putting Hospitals under

A local councillor and member of the Regional Health forum west has called for urgent for action to be taken in addressing the situation where alcohol is placing extreme pressure on local Hospitals.

It emerged over the Christmas period that one in five emergency admissions to hospital is due to alcohol.

The study claimed that alcohol is imposing an “enormous” burden on our emergency departments.

Calls have been made for the establishment of alcohol care teams in hospitals to address the issue.

Sligo Drumcliff Councillor Donal Gilroy says that there is no disputing that treating patients under the influence of alcohol is challenging for healthcare staff in our Hospitals.
