Youthful Sligo hurlers narrowly beaten by Roscommon



A youthful Sligo senior hurling team began 2024 with a narrow 3-23 to 2-23 prelim round loss to Roscommon in their opening match of the Connacht senior hurling league at the Air Dome on New Year’s Day.

Sligo, under new hurling boss Stephen Shiel, led by two points at half-time, 1-14 to 1-12.

Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch scored 1-11 for the Yeats County on the day.

He was one of five O’Kelly-Lynch brothers playing for Sligo in this game.

Sligo actually led by five points as the game ticked into added time, but Roscommon finished with a flourish, scoring 2-1 inside a minute to turn the match on its head.

Roscommon’s victory means they now play Mayo in the Connacht hurling league semi-final on Wednesday evening at 7pm.

Leitrim hurlers begin their Connacht hurling league challenge on Tuesday, when they play New York in a prelim round match at the same venue at 5pm.

The game will be livestreamed by Connacht GAA.
