One fifth of emergency admissions to Hospitals is due to Alcohol

With the two local Hospitals in the region among those facing overcrowding issues over a period of time there will be interest in new findings published this morning in relation to the pressure alcohol is placing on Hospitals and its staff.

New data published today shows one in five emergency admissions to hospital is due to alcohol.

That’s according to a new study, which claims alcohol is imposing an “enormous” burden on our emergency departments.

Researchers from Beaumont Hospital, who carried out the research, say there should be an urgent setting up of alcohol care teams in hospitals to address the issue.

The Irish Examiner reports the study found that while alcohol-related admissions reduced when minimum unit pricing was brought in, it wasn’t possible to conclude there was a direct effect.
