Policing Authority calls for more information to be provided to Gardai on locations of international protection centres.



The Policing Authority have called on the Government to improve their communications with Gardaí over the areas that are selected for international protection centres.

 

In recent times it has been mentioned that accommodation in Ballyshannon in Co Donegal and Dromahair in Leitrim.

 

The moves have been met by strong opposition in both areas with moves to deploy refugees to the respective sites temporally on hold.

 

 

Another potential site to house asylum seekers was burnt to the ground following anti-immigrant protests in Galway.

 

 

The Garda Commissioner has said that Gardai were not officially notified of plans to accommodate asylum seekers in the Ross Lake Hotel.

Meanwhile the Leitrim For All group has issued a statement in relation to the events in Dromahair.

 

They says they stand united in support of the arrival of Asylum Seekers to the north Leitrim village.

 

Recognising the challenges these individuals face, especially during the Christmas period, the group emphasises the importance of fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment and claim that this is an opportunity for the Dromahair community to come together and extend a warm embrace to the new arrivals.

 

They say It is crucial to acknowledge the hardships faced by Asylum Seekers and work collaboratively to ensure their integration into the fabric of the town.

 

The statement goes on to say that they recognise and appreciate the efforts of the on-the-ground group ‘Dromahair Welcomes You.’ This dedicated group will be doing their utmost to provide support and assistance to the new arrivals. Their presence is instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition and fostering a sense of community.

 

The group urges the community to engage in initiatives that promote understanding and cooperation, fostering connections that will transform newcomers from strangers to valued members of the town.
