Farming official fears delayed ACRE payments will impact many local families

A Leitrim Councillor and member of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association is calling on the Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue to take action on the delays in ACRES payments to farmers.

Brendan Barry says 18,000 farmers including many in the counties of Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal are facing into Christmas without vital funding provided from the Agri Climate Rural Environment scheme.

The Sinn Fein Councillor fears it could now be February before many farmers will receive funding.

The Drumshanbo based farming official says there is no good reason whey farmers have not got their money.

Responding to the calls the Minister for Agriculture says the large number of applicants under the scheme has led to the delays.

Minister McConalogue has admitted that it could be February before some farmers will receive payments under the scheme.

Speaking to Ocean FM news the Donegal TD expressed his disappointment that some payments will not be made until next year.
