It’s being reported that Letterkenny University Hospital is one of five more hospitals that will start carrying out abortions this month.
The move comes over five years after legislation providing for terminations of pregnancy was passed.
The commencement of terminations is taking place following the recruitment of staff specifically tasked to provide the service.
The Irish Times are reporting that the expansion of the service will result in 17 out of 19 maternity units in the Republic being in a position to carrying out terminations.
It’s also thought that terminations will be provided in the Cavan General Hospital next year.
