Sligo LGFA celebrates 30th birthday in style

Sligo LGFA celebrated 30 years of women’s gaelic football in the Yeats County on Saturday night with a special Celebration Banquet at the Clayton Hotel in Sligo.

Connacht LGFA President Con  Moynihan, Junior Minster for Sport Thomas Byrne, Sligo GAA Chair Sean Carroll and Kilkerrin Clonberne All-Ireland senior club winning captain Louise Ward were among the special guests on the night.

The achievement of the Sligo LGFA county minor and under-16 football teams in both reaching All-Ireland finals in 2023 was a centrepiece of the night as players from both squads received their Connacht championship winners and All-Ireland runners-up medals.

Both Sligo teams were narrowly beaten by Kerry in their respective All-Ireland deciders earlier this year.

The 30-year celebrations on the night included Hall of Fame Awards for Marty Duffy (Eoghan Rua), Eileen Gallagher (St Nathy’s) and Paddy Henry (Tourlestrane) to mark their respective contributions to the women’s game in Sligo.

The ‘Team of the 30’ award went to St Nathy’s LGFA for their achievements in Sligo over the past three decades.

There were Club Volunteer of the Awards winners on the night were Jean Walsh (Curry) and Aisling Browne (Coolera/Strandhill).

The Sligo LGFA Club All-Star 15, chosen from this year’s Connacht Gold adult club championships in 2023, were also presented with their awards – with full forward on the All-Star selection, Ciara Henry (CT Gaels) also collecting the ‘Golden Boot’ award as the championship’s leading scorer in 2023 with 6-22.
