Owenmore Gaels reach first ever Connacht final

Owenmore Gaels produced a gutsy second-half to come from three points down and beat Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher of Leitrim in Sunday’s eventful Connacht junior club football semi-final at the province’s Centre of Excellence in Bekan.

It’s a first-ever adult provincial final for the Collooney club – and they will face Lahardane MacHale’s of Mayo who beat Menlough of Galway on penalties in Sunday’s other semi-final.

The Gaels were pushed all the way by a gallant Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher, who lost the Leitrim junior football final to St Mary’s by a point – but went forward to Connacht the county’s representatives as Mary’s first team is a senior graded side.

The North Leitrim men lead by 1-6 to 0-6 at half-time with Patrick Gilgunn contributing an impressive 1-4 over the course of the hour.

However, Owenmore Gaels showed the greater stamina in the second 30 minutes, scoring five unanswered points at one stage to edge a point clear as the game entered the closing stages.

The Connacht junior club final will take place on the weekend of December 2nd/3rd.
