Mixed fortunes for local teams in FAI Junior Cup

There were mixed fortunes for the three remaining Sligo Leitrim clubs in Sunday’s FAI Junior Cup round 3 ties.

Strand Celtic, who reached the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup 12 months ago, booked their place in the fourth round thanks to a 1-0 home win against Ballinasloe Town.

Leo Doherty’s first-half goal for Strand proved to be the matchwinner in a contest which saw both teams finish the game with 10 players.

Cartron United were beaten 2-0 by Westport United in Mayo – while Carbury FC suffered a 5-0 defeat to an impressive Castlebar Celtic side.

Elsewhere, newly-promoted Gurteen Celtic have gone top of the Southern Hotel Super League following their 3-3 draw at Arrrow Harps.

Aughanagh Celtic remain three points clear at the top of the Sligo Pallets Premier League after a 4-1 win away to Kilglass Enniscrone Utd.
