Fianna Fáil to stage Sligo Drumcliff election convention next week

The Fianna Fáil Party will select a candidate to contest the local elections in the Sligo Drumcliff Municipal District next week.

The Party’s convention will take place in the Southern Hotel in Sligo on Thursday October 19th.

It’s expected that three names will be in the running for the nomination with sitting councillor Donal Gilroy likely to be challenged for the nomination by Edel MacSharry and Colm McGauran.

While only one candidate will be selected next week there is the possibility that party HQ could selected a second at a later state.

Gerard O’ Connor is the Chairman of the party CDC in Sligo.

He says the decision to select only one candidate could be down to the fact that the total valid vote is expected to be relatively small and as a result a low quota may be required in order for a candidate to be selected.

Gerard O’Connor says the Party will also want to study the votes from the convention before making any further decision on candidates.
