Sligo Councillor warns less nursing homes will increase pressure on Hospitals

A Sligo Councillor has expressed concern over how the possible closure of nursing homes could impact local hospitals.

Recently both Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals were deemed as some of the most over-crowded in the Country.

Continues calls have been made for greater investment in step-down facilities including nursing homes to help relieve the pressure on the health system.

However recent figures have confirmed that up to 592 older people forced to leave their nursing home due to closures in the last year.

Since September 2022, 18 nursing homes have closed their doors.

Sligo Councillor Donal Gilroy is a member of the Health Forum West.

He says it needs to be established why so many nursing homes are closing.
