Manor Rangers win first game in new women’s amateur league

Manorhamilton Rangers (pictured) and Carrick Town created a little piece of local soccer history on Friday evening at Ray MacSharry Park as they contested the first league fixture in the new Sligo-Leitrim adult women’s amateur league.

Manor won the game 5-0 in a fixture which kickstarts a new era for women’s football in the region.

12 clubs have entered the inaugural league – and the squads feature a mixture of players who’ve come through the clubs’ respective underage ranks, and returning players to the game for the first time in 10 or 15 years.

They are Arrow Harps, Ballisodare Utd, Ballymote Celtic, Calry Bohs, Carrick Town, Glenview Stars, Gurteen Celtic, Kilglass Enniscrone Utd, Manor Rangers, Real Tubber, Valley Rovers and Yeats United.

The opening fixtures are listed below.

Manor players Saoirse Maguire (capt), Rebecca McLoughlin and her sister Shannon spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan following Friday’s landmark game.

Carrick Town FC quartet Emma Dunne (capt), Sharon Greene, Rosie Mulhern and Rebecca O’Neill gave their reaction to Austin too.

In the night’s other game, Ballisodare United girls fought back from 4-1 down to earn a 4-4 draw at home to Kilglass Enniscrone Utd.
