New bye-laws could reduce visitors to region

Proposed new bye-laws for the Shannon catchment area which, reduce mooring times from 5 to 3 days, removes winter mooring and imposes a tax on all business operating on the Shannon could be very counter-productive for the local tourism sector.

That’s the warning being issued by Leitrim Councillor Enda McGloin who says that there is nothing to suggest that such moves could be extended to other parts of the north west where water tourism play an important role in attracting visitors to the region.

The Fine Gael Councillor has called on Waterways Ireland and Minister Malcolm Noonan to carry out a public consultation before the introduction of such measures.

Cllr McGloin says if proposed new laws are introduced, they will reduce both overnight stays and visitors which in turn will have a detrimental effect on all towns and villages in Leitrim.
