Donegal’s Tyler Toland recalled to Ireland soccer squad

Donegal’s Tyler Toland has been called up to the Republic of Ireland senior women’s squad by caretaker boss Eileen Gleeson for the upcoming Nations League games against Northern Ireland and Hungary this month.

Toland’s recall ends a four-year exile from the senior international squad.

She was Ireland’s youngest senior international when she made her debut aged 16 in 2017, but did not play for the national team during Vera Pauw’s time in charge as there was a bitter falling-out which was played out in public.

Her last Ireland game was in the Euro qualifying win at home to Montenegro in September 2019, when Tom O’Connor was interim boss and Pauw had just been named as Colin Bell’s successor.

Gleeson has selected a squad of 25 players for Ireland’s first games in the 2023-24 UEFA Nations League.

It also includes Toland’s fellow county-woman Amber Barrett.

They will host Northern Ireland on Saturday, September 23 in Aviva Stadium to kick off their Group B1 opener in League B – which has already sold over 30,000 tickets.

The squad will then travel directly after that first game to Budapest to take on Hungary on Tuesday, September 26 in the Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium.

There are recalls to the squad for defenders Savannah McCarthy, Hayley Nolan and Éabha O’Mahony, midfielder Tyler Toland and forwards Saoirse Noonan and Emily Whelan.

Injuries rule out Niamh Fahey, Megan Campbell, Aoife Mannion, Jessie Stapleton, Claire Walsh, Tara O’Hanlon, Roma McLaughlin, Jess Ziu, Sinead Farrelly and Leanne Kiernan.

Both Áine O’Gorman and Harriet Scott have retired from international football and will be honoured ahead of the Northern Ireland game.
