Sligo Councillor fears lagging region will see more empty commercial buildings

A local Councillor says the new rates waver scheme may in time help address the high vacancy rate that currently exists in the north west.

One in Five commercial properties continue to remain empty in Sligo.

The figures were confirmed in new Geodirectory report which was published this morning.

Sligo was the county with the highest commercial vacancy rate, while the figure was also high in Donegal.

Towns such as Sligo, Boyle and Ballybofey all reported high vacancy rates.

The figures were in contrast to those recorded in the east of the Country where more buildings are occupied.

Sligo Fianna Fail Councillor Donal Gilroy says the north west is lagging behind the rest of the country and it’s as a result of being neglected by successive governments.
