Ireland quartet into repechage at World Rowing Championships

Sligo’s Brian Colsh and the Ireland men’s quadruple sculls crew finished sixth in Monday morning’s heat of the senior World Rowing Championships in Serbia.

Drawn in Heat 2, the Irish boat was up against two of the medal contenders in this event, Romania and the Netherlands – with just two boats qualifying automatically for the semi-finals.

It’s understood that the Ireland four also suffered a bout of food poisoning in the days leading up to Monday’s race, which didn’t help their preparations.

Colsh, who won World U23 gold for Ireland earlier this year, is rowing in the Quad event with fellow gold medallist Konan Pazzaia and the Cork duo of Andrew Sheehan and Ronan Byrne.

The Irish four now prepare for the repechage on Tuesday in their bid to make the semi-finals.

Their repechage heat is scheduled for 11:36am (Irish time) on Tuesday.
