Wins for Kilcar & Aodh Ruadh on opening Championship weekend

Aodh Ruadh, Ballyshannon and Kilcar both recorded victories on the opening Sunday of the Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure senior football championship in Donegal.

The championship began as news filtered through that Donegal GAA have brought forward their next county board meeting to this Monday evening (Aug 21st) in Convoy at 7:30pm with just one item on the agenda – the senior football manager appointment.

Sunday’s round 1 games saw Aodh Ruadh record a dour 0-7 to 0-3 win over Four Masters in Donegal town, in a defensive contest, which was low on scores and quality.

Kilcar were given an early scare by Cloughaneely in Towney as they came back from a 0-8 to 0-2 deficit to win by 0-16 to 0-11 in the end with Paddy McBrearty contributing eight of Kilcar’s scores.

All sixteen senior teams in Donegal play four round-robin matches – before the league standings at the stage determine the top clubs to progress directly to county quarter-finals.

The next eight sides will contest four preliminary quarter-finals
