Sligo Rovers beaten 2-0 by Athlone Town

An understrength Sligo Rovers team resumed their SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division season on Saturday night with a 2-0 loss away to Athlone Town.

First half goals from Dana Scheriff and Chloe Singleton gave Athlone the points in what was both clubs first league game following  the mid-season summer break, due to the Women’s World Cup.

Donegal’s Eimear Lafferty, who signed for Rovers this weekend, made her club debut in Saturday’s game.

However, Rovers were without a number of first-team regulars including Keela Scanlon, who suffered a season-ending injury during the break – and Sarah Kiernan, who’s also injured.

The Athlone team on Saturday included Leitrim’s Muireann Devaney and Gurteen native Roisin Molloy, whose attacking play caused Rovers several problems in this game.

Rovers remain second from bottom in the league table following the weekend’s results.
