Ireland mixed relay team finish 6th in World final

North Sligo Athletic Club’s Chris O’Donnell helped Ireland to a sixth-place finish in Saturday’s final of the 4 x 400 metres mixed relay on the opening night session of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The quartet clocked a time of 3:14.13 in what was their third world final in as many years having reached the Tokyo Olympics decider in 2021, and the World Championship final in Oregon 12 months ago.

The race was won in dramatic fashion by USA, who overhauled the Netherlands in the final metres, with Dutch star Femke Bol falling just before the line, dropping the baton and missing out on silver as a result.

O’Donnell, who ran the penultimate leg Saturday night’s final, doesn’t have much time to rest.

He goes in the heats of the men’s individual 400 metres on Sunday morning at 9:25am Irish time.

O’Donnell’s race will be broadcast live on Virgin Media 2 television.
