Shamrock Gaels & St Mary’s reach Sligo league final

Shamrock Gaels and St Mary’s will contest next Friday’s Furey’s Coaches senior division 1 league final after Sunday’s final round of fixtures produced a three-way tie at the top of the table.

Wins for St Molaise Gaels over Bunninadden (1-13 to 1-1-8), Shamrock Gaels over Coolera/Strandhill (2-10 to 0-8) and for Mary’s over Calry/St Joseph’s (0-19 to 1-10) saw them finish level on 18 points each after nine games.

However, the GAA rule book states that the order of teams is determined by the head-to-head games between the teams involved.

The number of points for a league win in Sligo changed mid-season from two points to three to coincide with the return of county players to their clubs.

This had the unintended consequence of demoting St Molaise Gaels to third place overall as their win in the league over Shamrock Gaels earned them two points – whereas St Mary’s and Shamrock Gaels victories were during the second-half of the league when three points were awarded for a win.

Thus, the mini-league ‘head-to-head’ finished as follows:

St Mary’s 3pts
Shamrock Gaels 3pts
St Molaise Gaels 2pts

The final is provisionally fixed for next Friday evening (Aug 11th).

At the bottom, St Farnan’s loss to Tourlestrane, coupled with Tubbercurry’s victory over Curry, saw the west Sligo club finish level on points with Curry.

But, as the head-to-head between the teams was a draw, Farnan’s are relegated along with bottom placed Bunninadden because of an inferior scoring difference.

Sunday’s Division 1 results
St Molaise Gaels 1-13 Bunninadden 1-8
Calry/St Joseph’s 1-10 St Mary’s 0-19
Coolera/Strandhill 0-8 Shamrock Gaels 2-10
Tubbercurry 1-16 Curry 0-12
Tourlestrane 3-12 St Farnan’s 0-4

In Division 2, Coolaney/Mullinabreena and Eastern Harps won promotion back to Division 1 after wins on Sunday.

They will contest the Division 2 league final next Friday.

Sunday’s Division 2 results
