Another World semi-final for Mona McSharry

Sligo’s Mona McSharry qualified for the semi-finals of the women’s 50 metres breaststroke on the penultimate day of the World Swimming Championships in Japan on Saturday morning.

She finished seventh in her heat in the early hours of Saturday – but her time of 30.45 seconds was 12 fastest from the heats overall and sees her through to the semi-finals.

The time was just off her Irish Record of 30.29 from the Irish Open Championships in April this year.

In the semi-final later on Saturday, McSharry finished 11th quickest overall which wasn’t enough to make Sunday’s final.

She’s already been a finalist this week in the 100 metres breaststroke, finishing fifth and narrowly missing out on a medal in what is her strongest event.

The Grange woman still has one further event to come on Sunday – the 4 x 100 medley relay.
