Clancy beaten in European Games boxing semi-final

Sligo boxer Dean Clancy lost his light welterweight semi-final bout to Sofiane Oumiya of France at the European Games in Poland on Friday.

The Frenchman, who’s a former Olympic silver medallist and three-time world lightweight champion, was a classy and experienced operator and won the contest 5-0 on the judges scorecard, although it looked a closer fight than that.

The result means Clancy will have to content himself with a bronze medal.

But crucially, he has already secured his place at next summer’s Olympic Games, which was the priority for the 21-year-old this week.
