Sligo boxer Dean Clancy qualifies for Paris Olympics

Sligo boxer Dean Clancy has qualified for his first Olympic Games following Wednesday’s quarter-final win for Ireland at the European Games in Poland.

He beat Italy’s Gianluigi Malanga by unanimous decision in their light-welterweight quarter-final bout – will all five judges scoring the contest in Clancy’s favour.

The victory assures Clancy of at least a bronze medal – and an automatic place at next summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.

Clancy dedicated his win and Olympic qualification to his Grandad, Tony White, who passed away last Saturday.

The funeral took place on Wednesday in Sligo – the day of Dean’s fight in Poland.

The Sligo man, who trains out of Sean McDermott Gym in Manorhamilton, competed in the Youth Olympics in 2018 – but Paris 2024 will be his first senior Games.
