Clancy begins bid to qualify for Paris Olympics

Sligo boxer Dean Clancy begins the qualification process for the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday when he competes for Ireland at the European Games in Poland.

Clancy is one of 15 Irish boxers at the Games this week – his first bout is on Friday in the 63.5kg category against Austria’s Arsen Chabyan.

The Irish team in Poland also includes Olympic gold medallist Kellie Harrington.

Clancy, who trains out of the Sean McDermott gym in Manorhamilton, has been in good form this season, having won a multi-nations event in the Czech Republic last month.

The Sligo man and his Ireland team-mates completed their preparations for the European Games as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted on Thursday to strip the International Boxing Association of its status as the sport’s world governing body.

The IOC’s executive board recommended the move earlier in June after the IBA failed to meet set reforms following its 2019 suspension over governance issues and alleged corruption.

Of 70 valid votes on Thursday, 69 voted in favour of the recommendation.

Thursday’s decision does not affect boxing’s inclusion in the Paris Olympics next year.
