Brian Friel Centre gets green light in Glenties

The old courthouse in Glenties is set to be transformed into a visitor attraction, celebrating the life of Brian Friel.

Plans for the project have been given the green light by Donegal County Council and it’s estimated that once completed, it’ll provide up to 30 full time jobs to the area.

Built in the 1840s, the former courthouse is a projected structure.

One of the best known Irish playwrights, Brian Friel had a strong affiliation to Donegal.

His play ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ in the fictional town of ‘Ballybeg’ was loosely based on the lives of Friel’s mother and aunts who lived in Glenties.
