Sligo Rovers beat league leaders Derry City

Sligo Rovers ended a run of three consecutive losses in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division on a Saturday night with a morale-boosting 1-0 win against league leaders Derry City at the Showgrounds.

Will Fitzgerald’s early deflected goal against his former club, inside the opening four minutes of the game, proved to be the matchwinner.

Rovers defender John Mahon appeared to be harshly sent off in the closing quarter of the game after picking up a second yellow card following a coming-together with Derry’s Ryan Graydon.

The three points lift Rovers above Drogheda United and back up to seventh.

Derry stay top of the table despite the loss.

Rovers manager John Russell spoke to LOI TV after the win.
