UN to award Private Seán Rooney posthumous medal of honour

It’s been revealed that the United Nations is to award Irish soldier and Donegal man Seán Rooney a posthumous medal of honour.

Private Rooney (23) was killed while on duty in Lebanon last year.

His convoy came under attack in December, while he was on peace-keeping duties with the Irish defence forces.

Private Rooney is to be posthumously honoured at a ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York.

A number of people have now been formally charged in connection with the attack.
