Second-half surge gives Sligo minors Connacht Shield title

Sligo minors came from four points down at half-time to beat neighbours Leitrim by 11 in Friday evening’s Connacht Minor Championship Shield final at Markievicz Park, on a final scoreline of 3-14 to 0-12.

The match was a ‘consolation’ final for the two counties who finished fourth and fifth in the Connacht minor championship round-robin series.

Karl Foley’s Leitrim impressed in the opening half to lead by 0-10 to 0-6 at the interval.

However, Sligo were a transformed team in the second 30 minutes as they outscored their opponents by 3-8 to -2 to take the silverware.

In Friday night’s Connacht minor championship semi-final, defending champions Mayo edged past Roscommon by 2-13 to 2-12.

They now face last year’s All-Ireland winners Galway in the Connacht minor final – which will be repeat of the 2022 provincial and All-Ireland deciders.
